You are an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and have also spoken about your mental

health issues in your articles; how do you approach these very personal issues and what do you hope to achieve?
I like to be as vulnerable as possible on my platforms, so people also know that I’m a real human being. We have similar struggles, and most people don’t talk about them. As a writer, I’ve always wanted to talk about these issues in my poetry. I feel good talking about it because when I came out, I didn’t have any gay people that I could look up to, that could guide me or mentor me, or just show me that life can be “normal,” so to speak. I’ve always been passionate about the LGBTQ+ community and telling stories . I think that having a platform also comes with a responsibility to talk about these issues. It’s the right thing to do.

Don't you regret it? It's very important to expose yourself in that way...
It's scary. There are times when I think, "Nobody is understanding what I'm saying." There was a time when I didn't regret it because I was still standing up for something, but the reaction I received was harsh. But no, in general I don't regret it.

How do you decide what to share? Is it just instinct?
Kind of. I don't share everything. I have limits on what I feel is okay to share. Mental health - I felt it was important to share that because it allows people to understand a little bit better who I am, where I come from, and some of the struggles I face.

On issues like gay book burnings, I have to speak up, I’m not going to be silent. There are other times when my voice shouldn’t be the loudest in the room, and I will step back and help raise other voices. In the case of the TikTok Trans Rights Readathon , I wasn’t going to make a video talking about the issues of the trans community, but I reposted other trans creators who were talking about it, leaving comments and things like that, because those are the voices we should be listening to right now. It’s just about discerning when it’s appropriate [to participate in the conversation] and when it’s not.

Where do you think all this is going? Do you imagine yourself continuing as a creator?
This journey has been crazy. It’s been one of those things where I keep walking through doors that open up for me. Last year, TikTok chose 12 people from the US as LGBTQ+ Trailblazers ( what they now call Visionary Voices), and I was one of them. I was surprised because I just make videos about books in my apartment. Sometimes as creators, we don’t see the i vp design officers email database mpact we have on others.

Since I know TikTok so well, I recently landed a job creating content for an advertising agency. I definitely want to write more and post in the future. However, it’s been one of those things where I’m seeing where it takes me. So far, I have a full-time job and am still able to do brand deals. I don’t know what’s next, but if you had asked me this a year ago, I wouldn’t have predicted what I’m doing now.
