In 68 AD, the White Horse Temple, the first Buddhist temple in China, was founded in Luoyang. The temple still exists, although the architecture is more recent, mostly from the 1500s. The White Horse Temple is located 12 km east of modern Luoyang.

In 493 AD, the Northern Wei Dynasty moved its capital from Datong to Luoyang and began building the man-made Longmen Grottoes. More than 30,000 Buddhist statues from that era were found in the caves. as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in November 2000.
