An 'Instagram for your thoughts': Facebook accelerates the development of its Twitter rival

Post by shukla7789 »

With a new application codenamed Barcelona, Meta (Facebook's parent company) intends to compete with Twitter.

While Twitter seems to be floundering, Facebook is jubilant. In early March, Facebook confirmed to the specialist newsletter kazakhstan mobile database that it was considering the possibility of developing a social network modeled on Twitter. This possibility has since been brewing, with internal prototypes appearing, notes Social Media Today .

Last March, Facebook confirmed this possibility to Platformer : "We are exploring the possibility of creating a decentralized social network for sharing text-based content. We believe there is an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share information about their interests."

Since the end of March, researcher Alessandro Paluzzi has been sharing visuals of a potential social network initially known under the code name P92. The project is now called Barcelona.

What would be released as a full-fledged app is being billed as an "Instagram for your thoughts." The concept seems similar to Instagram's "Channels" feature, announced on February 23rd. This feature allows certain highly followed accounts to broadcast messages to their followers. It looks like a one-way messaging service to inform fans of news and events.

Stand out from existing alternatives
To keep Meta's (Facebook and Instagram's parent company) apps connected, users will log in to Barcelona with their Instagram credentials. Those without an Instagram account will be able to create a new username.

Some information about the future application already outlines its outlines. The length of posts will be limited to 500 characters and each thread will be able to contain a maximum of 100 messages. No launch date has yet been announced, but the project seems to be taking shape quickly as the group carried out a second wave of layoffs in early March.

A risky bet for Meta, given that many alternatives to Twitter already exist. But Meta could have a head start thanks to its scale and large number of users on Instagram.
