After several months of speculation and presumptions, the rumors are becoming reality. The “Biedronka” supermarket chain, owned by the Portuguese Jeronimo Martins, is introducing card payments from July. Although the company’s representatives are officially silent, the media are already certain of this fact. The information was first reported by the daily “Gazeta Prawna”. Referring to a tender to select a supplier of terminals for stores. The situation was clear and showed that “Biedronka” was looking for the cheapest offer and supplier of devices.
The reduction of interchange fees has brought changes
Christmas spendingThe key aspect that decided to introduce plastic payments in the chain of cheap discount stores was of course the reduction of the interchange fee. According to the act, this commission drops to 0.5% from July. Biedronka representatives said directly that this was the last reason that hindered the introduction of this form of payment in the chain known to Poles.
However, this is not the end of good news. Master Card recently informed about the possibility of reducing the interchange fee to 0.3% for the largest chains. Biedronka, which is the second largest discount chain in Poland, would definitely take advantage of such an opportunity. Experts estimate that with such low commissions, this could mean a reduction in the costs of plastic transactions for the chain of stores by even several dozen million złoty per year.
Biedronka will be served by Pekao SA
Card service in Biedronka will be guaranteed by one of the largest el salvador whatsapp database on the Polish banking market, Bank Pekao. What's more, in cooperation with Jeronimo Martins, the bank will release a loyalty card for store customers. The supermarket chain will also be able to use a credit line at Pekao.
Plastics as a chance to increase sales
Studies of Poles' shopping habits clearly indicate that this could be a way to increase the revenues of the Portuguese chain. When paying with cards, we usually spend more than when using cash. In addition, some of us avoided Biedronka precisely because of the limitation of payments only to cash. The company's shareholders also added their two cents, complaining about the decline in revenue dynamics recently.
Lengthening queues at the checkouts?
For regular customers, the appearance of plastics may also have a certain disadvantage. Namely, card payments usually take longer than cash payments. Only some of us still use contactless payments and these are usually amounts up to PLN 50. Let's remember the time needed to enter the PIN code and wait for the terminal to connect to the system and confirm the transaction. The situation does not seem particularly burdensome, as long as the checkouts are sufficiently staffed. And this can vary, as I found out, for example, during today's shopping in the supermarket. Out of five checkouts, only one was staffed.
