The Creator, the (perhaps prophetic) film that imagines a world at the mercy of Machiavellian AI

It is the most fashionable technology at the moment, but it has been quite some time since dystopian films about artificial intelligence (AI) have appeared on the big screen , where it is the machines, manifestly superior to their creators, that decide on the (rather gloomy) future of humanity.

Ex-Machina , released in 2014 and directed by Alex Garland, approached AI with both rigor and finesse. And Avengers: Age of Ultron , released in 2015, also sank its teeth into this technology, although it was a title lacking the intellectual packaging of the film directed by Alex Garland.

Grant Sputore also delved into the intricate twists and turns of AI in his film I Am Mother , which was both claustrophobic and incisive in tone. And on September 29, another feature film will hit theaters, with a markedly warlike and somber tone, set against AI . We are referring to The Creator , whose trailer was released last week and imagines a future war between humanity and artificial intelligence (which, as many fear today, has ended up rebelling against its creators).

Directed by Gareth Edwards, the director of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story , The Creator provides shelter (or so it seems at first glance) for a colorful mix of elements seen a thousand times in the fertile science fiction genre. The fact that its protagonist is a soldier on a mission to kill a lethal robot in the (seemingly harmless) casing of a small child is somewhat reminiscent of the first episodes of the series The Mandalorian , where the bounty hunter Din Djarin refuses to hand Grogu over to the Imperial forces.

In The Creator, there are also details that seem directly inspired by Ex-Machina . In that film, india number screening Ava, the android played by Alicia Vikander, managed to escape from the facility in which she had been trapped since her creation as a slave to the sociopath Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac) only because Caleb Smith (Domhall Gleeson), who is clearly inferior on an intellectual level, agreed to free her. And in The Creator , humans also seem irresistibly subjugated by the machines (superior and not necessarily with good intentions) that they themselves have created.

Will the grim future imagined by The Creator become real ?

Filled with terrifying visions of a future ruled by AI and thoughtful questions about the true nature of humanity, The Creator emerges at what is probably the most opportune moment : when AI, once a kind of entity, may truly become (or so many experts venture) the executioner of the humanity that paradoxically created it.
