Children's Day is a very special day for children, but it can be a tough one for parents. Every year, the first half of October generates billions of reais for the Brazilian economy, even after regulations on advertising products aimed at children.

Anyone who sees the thousands of businesses offering promotions and argentina phone number list for this day can hardly imagine that, when it first appeared, about a hundred years ago, it had no commercial purpose. Like other celebrations, such as Christmas and Valentine's Day, Children's Day gained popularity and commercial visibility after advertising campaigns took advantage of the occasion in the mid-20th century.

In this article, we will delve into the impact of Children's Day on the economy, what the expectations are for 2024, how the date came about, and much more. Keep reading!

How did Children's Day come about?
Did you think that Children's Day was a date invented by the market? Then you couldn't be more wrong!

In 1923, Brazil hosted the 3rd South American Children's Congress, an event focused on the debate about the importance of defending children's rights and interests. The success of the event inspired federal deputy Galdino Valle Filho to propose the creation of Children's Day through a bill, which was sanctioned by Decree No. 4,867, on November 5, 1924.

The aim of the date was initially to reflect on the right to childhood and the importance of protecting Brazilian children, as did the 1923 congress. October 12, however, continued to be known by the general population only as the day of Brazil's patron saint, Our Lady of Aparecida, and Children's Day only became popular in the 1950s.

Estrela, a well-known children's toy manufacturer, together with Johnson & Johnson, created Robust Baby Week in 1955, bringing visibility to the date. The advertising campaign was a success and, since then, several companies have joined the celebration with the intention of increasing their sales and their presence in the children's products market.

What is the impact of Children's Day on the Brazilian economy?
Today, almost seventy years after it became popular, Children's Day is the third most important date for national commerce , behind only Mother's Day and Christmas, according to the National Confederation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC).

The three largest states in the southeast region are also the leaders in sales on Children's Day: São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, but Paraná was the one that grew the most in sales on the date between 2022 and 2023.

In 2023, the growth in the average price of the gift basket (among 11 groups of goods and services related to the date, such as sweets, sneakers, video games, toys, books, clothes, etc.) was 6.7% compared to 2022, and sales related to the date reached R$9.11 billion reais.

What are the expectations for Children's Day in 2024?
According to the same CNC study, expectations for 2024 are high: Children's Day should generate around R$9.35 billion, 2.6% more than in 2023. Despite the rise in interest rates and inflation, the reason for optimism is the low unemployment rate, which reached its lowest level in more than ten years, which means that hundreds of families are in a more stable and favorable situation.
